Poker Dictionary – Bad Beat

What is a bad beat?

A bad beat in poker is when a strong hand loses the pot to a stronger hand. When a considerably strong hand loses to a hand that was unlikely to win, it is said to be a bad beat. This can happen when a player makes a strong hand on the flop or turn. However, an opponent makes an even stronger hand on the river to unexpectedly take the pot. 

Example of Bad Beat

Player A hits a full house on the flop. Since player A has a full house, he/she plays aggressively because a full house is a strong hand to play with. However, Player B  hits a flush on the river. In this case, Player A, who had a strong hand from the start, will lose the pot to player B. Hence, player A is having a bad beat.

How to deal with Bad Beat?

Bad beats in poker are inevitable. If a player faced a bad beat, it does not mean he/she made a strategic error. Bad beats can be mentally and psychologically demotivating for players, however, it is important to remember that it is just a game. One can make up for the loss by playing strategically further in the game. It is also important to not let the bad beat affect the rest of your game.
