Poker terms are universal; they are versatile terms that have meanings specific to poker. One such poker term is ‘Backer.’ Let’s take a look at this poker term today.

What does ‘Backer’ mean in poker?

A backer is an investor who funds a poker player with an adequate bankroll. The player is supposed to return a percentage of their profits to the backer in return. If the player loses money, the backer is the one who faces a major loss. In poker, the process of backing a poker player is also known as staking. The person being backed is known as a ‘horse.’ 

Is staking profitable? 

Staking is just another form of investing. There are no guarantees on how profitable it will be. Players usually accept backing because it allows them to grind in high-stakes games which they can’t with their current bankrolls.

What does a typical ‘backing’ arrangement looks like? 

Instance 1:

Player X is a skilled poker player but is not very good at bankroll management. Player Y, on the contrary, has a good bankroll. So, both the players come to a conclusion/ agreement wherein any profits made by player X (who is funded by player Y) will be split between the two. The prize money is split according to the agreement, either 70/30 or 50/50.

Instance 2:

This is a long term backing plan. Player X is a skilled poker player and Y is a wealthy player who is well versed with the game and in business too. Both the players come to an arrangement that player Y will back player X in high-value tournaments. 

Is backing advantageous in poker? 

Backing or staking provides several benefits to a player such as managing his stock flong-run, reducing stress which can be caused due to downswings. Staking also creates great networking opportunities as more often than not, those players are backed who can communicate easily. Moreover, a poker backer also provides coaching to his “horse” to improve his game.
