Poker Dictionary – Action Button

There are several variants of poker that have evolved over the years. Not just the game, even the vocabulary has evolved with new terms getting added to the list. Not knowing poker terms and phrases may leave you confused in a conversation about the poker game. Today, we will discuss the term called Action Button. The term is commonly used in a seven-card stud high-low game. So let’s see what ‘Action Button’ means.

What is Action Button?

Contrary to the literal meaning, the action button is in fact not the button position or any position on the poker table. The action button is a bet posted to win the pot above a certain size in a seven-card stud high-low poker game.

Once the blinds are posted and the players call, the bet that a player makes to raise the blinds is the action button. The other players who have already acted should have only called or folded, not bet. After the action button, the round of betting continues and the players now have to call the action button bet or raise the bet. 

Example:

On a poker table, Player A is the dealer. A round of betting starts with Player B posting the small blind of ₹500 and Player C posting a big blind of ₹1,000. Player D and Player E call the big blind. Player F bets ₹2,000. This bet is called the action button. 

In this case, had Player E made the bet, his/her bet would be the action button. The round then continues and Player D and Player E will have to contribute ₹1,000 respectively to the pot if they wish to continue playing the game.
