The world of poker is full of poker-specific terms and technical jargon that may be a little difficult to understand at times. There are names given to particular cards, a group of cards, strategies and more. Not knowing these words can sometimes leave you confused! But, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this thrilling game.

Today, let’s talk about ‘Ace-in-hole’. You must have come across this term several times- while playing, watching some exciting tournaments, etc. But what does ace-in-hole really mean? What is ‘ace-in-hole’?

The term ace-in-hole is generally used to describe a situation when a player is dealt with an ‘Ace’ as a hole card. As per the rules of poker, every player is dealt with two cards known as hole cards that are not supposed to be revealed by the player, unless there’s a showdown. If a player is dealt with at least one ace card as a hole card, then it is said that the player has been dealt an ace-in-hole.

Usage of the term

The fun part about this phrase is that even though it has been derived from the game of poker, the usage of the term has not been restricted only to the game. It has become a popular idiom to describe a secret advantage or a trick that is not revealed until it is used. It has become a popular phrase in other games, sports, businesses even in political and economic contests.

How to play an ‘Ace-in-hole’?

Since the Ace is the highest and most valuable card in the order of cards in poker, being dealt with an ace is always a strong card to have. You can choose to call or bet pre-flop with an ace-in-hole since no matter what opens on the board you have an ace-high hand, which can beat any other high card hands. Post-flop, on the turn and river, you can take a call on how you want to play the ace-in-hole, depending on what opens on the board and the hand you make.
