Phil Hellmuth’s latest record of losing big money in poker is surely something that has got him disappointed (more like fuming), and it’s obvious. A couple of days ago, he set a new record when it came to registering losses in a live streamed game.
He lost $194K, which is the most he has ever lost on a live-streamed poker game. Dejected and upset, he announced that he was having a bad week and cancelled all his upcoming games scheduled for the week and that he was returning home.
Among the various things that were lined up for the 16-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner this week was a live stream game where he was supposed to play with Kevin Martin at the Live at the Bike. It all started later last month when Hellmuth publicly invited Martin to play with him. The two were supposed to play on 15th February 2023.
Yo @KevinRobMartin, come film @LIVEattheBike w me Feb 15th? Always room for good guys like you! #POSITIVITY pic.twitter.com/Idi0gGubuf

However, after suffering the humiliating loss this week, Hellmuth tweeted that he was cancelling all his commitments and flying back home.
Still a bit stunned! Canceled everything ✈️ home. Lost $194K filming @LIVEattheBike Tues—my new record live stream loss. But wait, I JUST set that record on Monday: $144,500. Remember when I won 30/32 live streams and $435K in 3 “Robs Game” streams? Feels like a distant memory…

Martin was furious and took to Twitter to express his anger and criticize Hellmuth. In his tweet, he described that after Hellmuth publically approached him, he gathered around $100K, which amounted to a considerable chunk of his net worth to pay for the travel, accommodation and more. He further wrote, “He quits because he’s having a bad week. Big fucking L for you @phil_hellmuth.” (sic.)
– Phil publicly invites me to play with him
– I gather 100k (chunk of my net worth)
– I travel, pay expenses, promote show
– my community is excited to see me battle the “best in the world”He quits because he’s having a bad week.

Hellmuth was kind enough to reply to Martin and also apologised and said that he would cover all of Martin’s travel expenses that he incurred. ‘PokerBrat’ further invited Martin to play and shoot two games in a row with him. “And, we will call it the “Kmart Game.” Deal?,” he added.
Yo @KevinRobMartin, my sincere apologies! I’m going to cover your travel expenses for this trip, and invite you to shoot w me for 2 days in a row on a Live Stream. And, we will call it the “Kmart Game.” Deal? https://t.co/Rz1AD4hTgW

Martin posted a reply to his earlier tweet clarifying that Hellmuth had personally called him after the incident to apologize and reschedule the game. He also stated that Hellmuth asked him to keep his original tweet anyway and that everything was good between the two.
Phil said leave the initial tweet up
Really a nice response by him we’re all good. 🙂

A lot of users replied to his tweet praising Hellmuth for his gesture.
That’s a sign of a true professional.

Good on him for responding and making it right! Reading people’s tweets about his mindset actually made me think differently on the whole situation from when I first read about him bailing. Still not a huge fan of the guy personally, but he is a true poker legend!

I knew @phil_hellmuth would do the right thing. The man took a beating and I understand the tunnel vision after a loss.
This is another reason why Phil has lasted decades upon decades, doing what’s best for himself mentally – even if he forgets a few details but makes it right.

This week was still a giant L for Phil but glad he made this small part of it right at least.

Although Hellmuth may be criticized for his behaviour at the poker tables, this act has certainly earned him some considerable respect. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
