Nvidia & Valve All Set To Push Linux Games A Notch Higher With DLSS

Nvidia partners with Valve to introduce Deep Learning Super Sampling(DLSS) powered games to Linux. However, not all games supported by DLSS will be available immediately. It will only be accessible on the Windows platform for games played via Proton

At the 2021 Computex event, Nvidia announced its collaboration with game developer Valve. Through this collaboration games played on Linux operating systems will use the DLSS technology to enhance overall gaming.

DLSS can dramatically enhance the frame rates without compromising on the quality of the graphics. But, as per news reports, less than 60 games will support DLSS currently, at least for a month. Additionally, out of these 60 games, only half of them work flawlessly in Proton, irrespective of DLSS support.

DLSS is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) rendering technology developed by Nvidia. It increases graphics performance using dedicated Tensor Core AI processors, exclusively developed for Nvidia graphic cards. In simpler terms, DLSS takes a low-resolution image, and upsamples it to a higher resolution using deep learning. This helps improve frame rates and generate beautiful, sharp images for your games, giving a higher visual gaming experience.

DLSS is Nvidia’s product and is supported only by special hardware in Nvidia cards, currently only the latest RTX 2000 series and above. Linux drivers are also Nvidia’s proprietary, however, Nvidia has not enabled DLSS feature in it yet.

At the Computex 2021 event, Nvidia’s competitor AMD announced a version of AI-powered upsampling of its own. AMD has named it FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). The functioning of the FSR is still unknown, the company has only revealed that the technology is under work and that it’s open source.

The launch date of FSR is unknown. But one thing is assured that if FSR doesn’t match up with DLSS in terms of quality, it won’t matter if FSR matches or even overpowers with its raw frame rate.
