Ashish Munot is 2019 WPT India Main Event champion!

The INR 55k WPT India Main Event has been the talk of the industry since it began three days back. The tournament attracted 630 entries which was slightly lower than last year’s participation of 697 entries. Play began today with just 9 of these players still in contention and by the end of it all, we had a new champion in Ashish Munot!

Munot is not new to winning big in poker, having plenty of online cashes including becoming India’s biggest online winner earlier this year when he won the IOPC Main Event on Spartan Poker in January. On the live felts too, he had one major title and that was from the Baadshah Kickoff Event in October last year.

He has been improving as a live poker player and his previous best live score came in July this year when he came 6th in the APT Vietnam Championships Event for $13,854. However, this best live score was smashed as he walked away with a life-changing amount of INR 63,48,641 for winning the 2019 WPT Main Event title! This came with a $3,500 WPT Passport which can be used at any global WPT Event.

Earlier in the day, Shardul Parthasarathi was the first casualty, busting to Saha in 9th place for INR 6,09,920. Yuvraj Chaudhary then sent Yash Punjawat out in 8th place for INR 8,13,010. Nishant Sharma and Sahil Nair were the next to go, earning INR 10.2 Lakh and INR 12.2 Lakh respectively. Rajeev Kanjani then sent Sami Sipila to the rail in 5th place for INR 15.2 Lakh, before the former himself busted in 4th place for INR 19.87 Lakh.

It was yet another deep run for Jai Saha, who began the final day as the chip leader. Prior to this, he made a couple of final tables in major tournaments, including a 7th place finish in the EPT National in August and a 9th place finish in the 888poker Main Event in June, both in Casino Barcelona. Here, he cashed another massive amount of INR 27,53,290 ($38,739) for ending in 3rd place.

That’s when heads-up began between Ashish Munot and Yuvraj Chaudhary (pictured above), both of whom were in the top 3 stacks when play began earlier today. Munot had a decent lead but since Chaudhary executed the last bustout, he managed to chip up to 7.67 million chips up against Munot’s 11 million.

The heads-up session went on for over an hour and finally after a few swings, Munot managed to close the tournament. Along with 1,000 points in the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year race, he bagged a career-best live cash. After a 550k pre-flop bet from Munot in the final hand, Chaudhary shoved all-in for 5.5 million and got the call. Munot revealed Tens and Chaudhary showed Queens, set to double up with A 7 4 8 on the board. However, the river popped up a Ten which was produced a set for Munot!

Final Table Results:

  1. Ashish Munot – INR 63,48,641
  2. Yuvraj Chaudhary – INR 42,77,605
  3. Jai Saha – INR 27,53,290
  4. Rajeev Kanjani – INR 19,87,220
  5. Sami Sipila – INR 15,24,970
  6. Sahil Nair – INR 12,28,645
  7. Nishant Sharma – INR 10,20,340
  8. Yash Punjawat – INR 8,13,010
  9. Shardul Parthasarathi – INR 6,09,920
