Melco to get cutting edge facial recognition tech

Melco Resorts and Entertainment has recently announced that they will revamp their facial recognition technology currently in employment in their resorts located in gambling hotspots Macau and Manila.

The company stated this in their Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2018 recently. The report also noted that, “Melco became the first operator in Asia to deploy real-time facial recognition security systems at every entrance to our gaming areas in Macau.” Since then, the casino operator said it has been “refining the technology and is preparing to install the latest generation in its properties in both Macau and Manila in 2019.”

The main reason for Melco to introduce an updated facial recognition technology will be to deter criminal activities happening at the casino and elsewhere in the complex. In March this year, Macau Unitary Police were happy with the addition of CCTVs and facial recognition software within the city’s casino operations.

The new technology would allow casinos to be able to detect persons who have been restricted to enter the casino floor. The company explained in its report that they would still be in compliance with data privacy requirements.

The company also recently stated that it will reduce the amount of plastic pollution they have created till now. They will look to clear all plastic waste and pollution, that’s the goal. Melco even signed an agreement regarding this, including the removal of single-use plastic bottles by the end of 2020. The company even got the socially responsible operator award at International Gaming Awards (IGA) this year.

The facial recognition technology comes from the company’s projection that 2019 will not be as lucrative a year as 2018. The company has committed itself to several other green-friendly ventures like ‘Above and Beyond’ strategy and has also set a goal to create carbon-neutral resorts that will eliminate carbon emissions by 2030. The company’s overarching goal is to produce minimum waste.
