Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a video game series that has marked its presence in popular culture at the start of the 21st century. The video game series has garnered attention for being controversial from the get-go. The violent nature of the games caused many countries like Britain, France, Germany, and Brazil to ban it immediately. Many accused it of glamorizing violence and corrupting young gamers due to its adult theme.

However, despite all the controversies surrounding the games, the series went on to become one of the most popular in the video gaming history. It could also be said that the publicity caused by the negative reception to its themes brought the game to the forefront, intriguing many to play the game.

Among the multiple installments that the game has received over the years, it’s the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City that is still deemed one of the best from the lot. Released in 2002, the game was developed and published by Rockstar North and Rockstar Games, respectively. The fourth entry into the series was set in the city of Miami and has mobster Tommy Vercetti at the centre of its storyline.

Set in the 1980’s the game is filled with biker gangs, Mafioso drug lords, and included characters from Cuba and Haiti. The game was also inspired by popular television series Miami Vice and Scarface. The open world game design allowed gamers to explore Miami City which was a major upgrade from its predecessors. Combine all this with the litany of pop-culture references littered across the game and you get an unforgettable experience that has remained in the minds of many gamers till today.

While the game’s graphics may seem crude and messy when compared to today’s video games, the sheer thrill it provided gamers of the early 2000s has caused it to forever be remembered as the best that there is to play.
