The inclusion of Esports in Asian Games 2022 has many Indian gamers thrilled as medals for the category will now be counted in the overall score. In the last Asian Games held in 2018, gamer Tirth Mehta won a bronze medal in the Esports category. Mehta is an expert in the game Hearthstone and is excited about the prospects of winning another medal for his country.
The Esports Federation of India (ESFI) has included video games like Free Fire, Call of Duty, and Valorant into their roster. While more games like Clash Royale, PES, FIFA, etc. will be included as well. The federation is pulling out all the stops to ensure that players are ready and prepared for the upcoming games.
The Esports industry is still at a nascent stage in the country and is not recognized as a sport like how football or cricket are. Unlike in other countries like China or Russia, the potential of Esports in the Indian sub-continent has yet to be fully realized. The addition of Esports in the Asian Games 2022 as a legitimate category, will play a huge role in bringing the industry to the forefront. Which is why ESFI is now preparing and training the players.
Lokesh Suji, Director of Esports Federation of India, revealed that they were doing daily scrims and holding weekly tournaments for the players. The players are then ranked based on their performances. The process would then help in identifying the best talent pool which could represent India at the Asian Games 2022 and other international events.
Players like Tirth Mehta and Karan Manganani, a player who got the fourth spot in Clash Royale, believe that this inclusion will give Esports players the much-needed support. Achievements in these areas will prove beneficial to players, as it will help them get more sponsors and recognition.
Overall, the good news has been a boon to the Esports industry. With ESFI taking the initiative to train and select the best, India could very well be on its way to adding more medals in the upcoming Asian Games 2022.
