Gutshot Rummy Dictionary – Deadwood

Gin Rummy is a type of popular rummy game played across the globe since the 1900s. Though it looks like a simple game, it takes years to ace the 2-player card game. Gin rummy is played amongst 2 players in which the goal is to meld all the cards into runs or sets before the opponent.

The term Deadwood in Gin Rummy means any remaining cards from your hand which are not part of a valid combination (set or run). The basic strategy in the game is to improve by making proper sets and eliminate the deadwood.

Deadwood Conditions

The deadwood count is the sum of the point values of the deadwood cards — aces are scored at 1 point, face cards at 10, and others according to their numerical values.

To knock, the hand is laid out with the melds clearly indicated and deadwood separated. The defending player is then supposed to lay out any melds in their hand and can then lay off their remaining deadwood cards that fit into the knocking player’s melds. Provided, the knocking player does not have a gin hand. The knocking player then subtracts their deadwood points from the defending player’s deadwood points.

In standard gin, Knocking with no deadwood cards is known as going Gin or having a Gin hand, while knocking with deadwood cards is known as going down. If all 10 cards in a player’s hand fit into melds and thereby the player has no deadwood, they can choose to go Gin after which the round ends and the player that won receives a Gin bonus and any deadwood points in the opponent’s hand. The defending opponent can only lay out their melds and cannot lay off any deadwood into the melds of an opponent that has declared Gin.
