Casinos across the globe are functional throughout the year and round the clock. Off the coast on river Mandovi, regarded as Goa’s lifeline, a cluster of ships turned casinos are afloat. All the land-based as well as offshore Casinos in Goa work 24 hours daily. Due to this routine, the Poker term Graveyard has come into practice.
The word Graveyard, in general refers to a burial ground, but in the context of Poker, Graveyard is the shift between midnight and breakfast in a 24-hour cardroom or casino. Most of the poker players in India only prefer the games at night as they are amateurs in this industry and are working professionals elsewhere. Graveyard shift usually starts anywhere between midnight or 2 am and ends eight hours later. Generally, least experienced dealers work in that shift. “Graveyard shift,” a term that dates to the early 20th century, comes from the presumed silence of the workplace at that hour, although many casinos have become as noisy as it is during the day.
Graveyard shift have also been called Lobster shift almost since the 1940s. Beginning in the 19th century, the term lobster was used to refer to a person who was considered a fool. In this context ‘lobster shift’ probably reflects the sentiment that only a fool (or an incompetent worker) would wind up working the midnight shift.
Bigger vessels pack upto 1500 people everyday in its 24×7 operations, the smaller vessels crowd in some 800-1000 passengers. As a result, the availability at night is an added on bonus for the foreigners too. Considered as India’s Las Vegas, Goa has the maximum number of tourists in India that visit mainly for their casinos. The decades of gambling in Goa and the nightlife in Casinos are an added incentive to the otherwise glamorous industry. Maximum number of people tend to participate in the Indian online live tournaments taking place at night.
