Google Introduces ‘Play While You Download’ Feature With Android 12

Google has some big news for gamers. Recently, during its Game Developer Summit 2021, Google announced some new features for the new Android 12.

Among a host of new features, there is one feature that is sure to benefit all gamers. The feature enables users to begin the game while downloading it on their Android devices. This cuts on the time that users have to wait while a game downloads and installs onto the device.

Currently, it’s a common process that for using any application or playing a game, a user must download the application from the Google Play Store. The long process of downloading and installing the application usually takes time depending on the connectivity, internet speed and other factors.

As per the new feature a user can just click on the download tab on Play Store and immediately start playing the game, while it downloads and installs in the background. This feature will offer two times faster access to games without interruptions.

Vitor Baccetti, the Senior Product Manager at Google Play says, “Users have limited attention spans and want to play right away.” The company suggests that since there is a sea of games available on Play Store, players usually don’t want to install games that take longer to download. Baccetti also says that the wait time is one of the core reasons why users cancel the download request leading to lower engagement. To combat this issue, Google has come with this ‘Play while you Download’ feature with Android 12.

This feature is possible due to the availability of a file system called ‘IncFS.’ This file system reads and identifies which components of the game are essential and downloads them first as the game runs. It also identifies the components that can be downloaded later in the background.
