Poker Dictionary – Back Raise

Like every game, poker too has its set of technical terms and strategies which are specific to the game. The more terms one is familiar with, the more strategic one can be at the game. The world of poker has so many terms, each having an interesting meaning and tale attached to it. Today we’ll look at a term for the move which is considered to be a very tricky and deceptive one – BACK RAISE.

What is a Back-raise?

A back raise is a raise one makes after already making a call in the same round of betting. In this scenario one restraints from putting in a raise initially when provided with the opportunity, but decides to raise only after someone else makes a raise. In a betting round you decide to call first, then the movement happens around the table. Once someone else raises, you then decide to raise.

It is a highly tricky and deceptive move used to trap the opponents. A back-raise is usually done during the pre-flop round of betting when there’s a squeeze.

Example of a Back-raise

Say a player next to the big blind, i.e. at Under the Gun position opens. The player in the Middle position calls. You are the dealer’s position with two Aces. Here, you have an option to make a bet, but that would make you look very strong. So instead of raising, you call with your pair of aces waiting for the next player to squeeze. He raises, and this time you decide to re-raise. This re-raising action is called a back-raise.

How to use it and how does it help?

It’s ideally used after limping (betting the minimum amount required to stay in the game). Initially one limps and after an opponent raises, one decides to re-raise or back-raise usually during the pre-flop bet.

In the above given example, say even if the next player does not act according to your plan and does not squeeze, you still have your aces, which is not at all a bad hand. Generally, one will just go for a 3bet in that position with the AA pair. But if you decide to play with just your aces and you call, you limit your range and kill the possibility of having a AA and KK. That’s why just calling initially and pushing your opponent to squeeze is a good strategy to trick your opponent and make the most of your opportunity.
