Should Online Gaming Advertisements Be Aired On Television?


That one time when Priyanka Chopra wore a silver figure hugging outfit and lured you to buy a bottle of Blenders Pride, you probably must have not known the impact that advertisements cause! Advertisements play a huge role in our lives. From getting their jingles memorized to instantly buying products just based on the way it is marketed, Indians and probably the whole wide world has come a long way. 

A few days ago, The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) discussed television advertisements around online gaming. The MIB’s notice to MPL about its advertisement states that their ads could be the examined by a provision of the Cable Television Network Act which prohibits ads that could potentially mislead the public into believing that a product has miraculous qualities. They also cited the Advertising Standards Council of India’s (ASCI) self-regulatory code which requires transparency around ads urging people to partake in lotteries or prize competitions and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which prohibits false or misleading ads. 

While so many points are taken into consideration to let an online gaming advertisement to air on television, the work of others in the business are probably being overlooked. Here’s how –

  1. A person dressed like a doctor speaks about the benefits of a medicine and as a consumer you may fall for it
  2. One actor promoting health insurance policies, carbonated drinks, sanitary napkins and much more. This purely comes across that he/she is marketing but where is the authenticity?
  3. Advertisements of smoking and drinking that entice you to actively consume them though medically they are prohibited

While these are just a few problems of the advertisements we currently watch, here’s why online gaming ads must be allowed on television:

  1. Online gaming has picked its pace in the recent ear of digital media. Though it was present since a decade, monetizing the same has only occurred since a few years. Allowance of advertisements could help in the masses understand the real value of online gaming.
  2. Recently Bollywood actress Kajal Aggarwal joined hands with Okie Gaming as a strategic ambassador. She is not the first actor as several other prominent names from the industry have invested in online gaming, Fantasy sports etc. Due to the relevance and the cascading growth of the industry, advertisements of the same will only lead to profits. 
  3. Taboo surrounding online gaming could get washed off as there will be a push to familiarize it among a larger audience.

Online gaming has drastically increased the scope and size of video game culture. Online games have attracted players from a variety of ages, nationalities, and occupations.
