JioGames Partners With SEGA To Bring Japanese Games To India


Indian telecom operator, Reliance Jio has partnered with Japanese gaming giant SEGA to include Japanese gaming titles on JioGames store. The deal will enable users to download SEGA games through Jio’s set-top-boxes (STB), smartphones and other devices. The Japanese company confirmed the news last week.

Currently, JioGames will offer only two of Sega games, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 3. The Japanese company will be in charge of customizing the game for the supported platform. Local languages will be incorporated into the two games. 

The Japanese gaming giant also said that the partnership will bring Sega games in Hindi and Tamil for the first time. The access for these games will be given first to JioFibre users.

Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released by the company in 1992 for the 16-bit Sega Genesis gaming console. It was one of the most popular games during the 1990s. The game was also one of the reasons why Sega was able to compete with Nintendo during that decade.

Streets of Rage 3 follows a similar side-scroller design as Sonic and was released two years after Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Streets of Rage was released on several consoles like Nintendo GameCube, the PlayStation 2 and the Wii Virtual Console later in 2007.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 3 are games that require lower processing power. Hence, the new Japanese games will be available on entry level phones as well. Unlike PUBG Mobile which uses higher processing power and hence can be available only on smartphones. 

According to Sensor Tower data, India accounted for 17% of the worldwide downloads of mobile games in the first nine months of 2020. The country saw a total of 7.3 billion game installs. When people were forced to stay indoors in 2020, the mobile gaming industry flourished like never before.

The growth of Indian gaming market has attracted many global partnerships with Indian gaming companies. In February this year, Jetsynthesys, a digital entertainment firm, partnered with Japanese gaming giant Square Enix, to launch a mobile game called Ludo Zenith in India.
