India: One of the Fastest-Growing Gaming Market

The Indian gaming market is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. The sector has flourished more since the nationwide lockdown as people confined within their home, have turned to online gaming for entertainment. The Indian online gaming industry is set to add 190 million gamer(s) and become a $1 billion opportunity by 2021, from $290 million today.

With the ability to download games on their easily accessible smart devices, the number of users have doubled during the pandemic. Gaming companies and gaming stores have been promoting discounts and bundle offers to encourage people to stay at home and play video games rather than moving out in the wake of the coronavirus.

Ludo, an online regional game with over 400,000 users playing daily during the lockdown is one example. It is expected that this number will increase in coming weeks and might even hit the one million mark. Internet search giant Google has started featuring doodles of its popular games on its homepage and offering its online cloud gaming service, Stadia, free of cost for two months. This move will enable Google to take a lead over its rivals in the cloud gaming market.

The Vice President and GM, Google Stadia, Phil Harrison said “Keeping social distance is vital but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating. Video games can be a valuable way to socialise with friends and family when you’re stuck at home”.

The online space has even helped to grow the popularity of skill games and made them more readily available. However, as there are already many skill games based sites for Indians, there is still room for more. The needs of online gamers keep changing and there’s a need for more innovation to cater for their needs.

Gaming has a universal recreational appeal for people across all ages and groups. The gaming industry has witnessed a paradigm shift with the evolution of television, digital and online gaming models leading to a surge in the number of online gaming sites over the last few years. Given the high growth potential of the gaming industry in India, many foreign entities are exploring possibilities to set up operations here.
