First released in 1996, the popular video game franchise ‘Tomb Raider’ will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The game is a fan-favourite with its titular character, Lara Croft, being one of the most recognizable fictional figures in the world. Through the years, the game’s developers, Crystal Dynamics, released multiple versions of the game while diving deep into the backstory and origin of Lara Croft.
The growth of the protagonist and the gameplay among other aspects have shown major improvements since the 1996 Tomb Raider. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was released in 2018 and was set to be the final installment to the Lara Croft’s origin trilogy.
While there is no new release scheduled for 2021, Crystal Dynamics have announced that they plan to celebrate the landmark event for the entire year. Starting from February 1, each month will focus on a different game of the franchise.
However, a new installment of the video game series is slated to be released in the near future and fans might have to wait a little longer. According to the developers, the new release aims to unify the story line of the reboot trilogy and the original games. There are many theories on how this will happen.
In the original games, Croft was portrayed as an attractive and adventurous thrill seeker. She was the archetypal action heroine, and the video game did not dive much into her character. Eventually, she was given a more realistic and grounded approach. The new take on Croft focused on her journey and character development along the way. The next game could merge these two interpretations of Croft.
