Apple’s Rules Blocked Our Gaming Service Too Microsoft Tells Court

Lori Wright, VP, gaming, media and entertainment at Microsoft testified in court on Wednesday in the ongoing Epic-Apple trial. She recollected how even Microsoft couldn’t get the iPhone makers to allow its Xbox to roll out their cloud gaming service on the App store. This prevented Microsoft’s gaming service from tapping into the iOS users.

App Store remained inaccessible even to one of the world’s most renowned technology companies, Microsoft. Epic Games is battling a lawsuit against Apple Inc. claiming that the iPhone maker unfairly blocks other gaming companies and developers from their App Store using their troublesome rules and policies. Wright testified from Epic’s side in the lawsuit justifying the claims against Apple.

Wright said, “Microsoft wanted its XCloud gaming service to be a one-stop shop for mobile games and was puzzled why Apple wouldn’t give the company a similar feature like Netflix and other businesses in the entertainment industry.

She further added that Apple’s condition to allow Xbox on their app store was such that it would require the users to download every Xbox game separately. That would be an inconvenient option. “Why couldn’t we have a single app with many games?” she asked while testifying.

After not finding a way into Apple’s app store, Microsoft began exploring other options like testing a work-around a web version of its XCloud service that can be accessed through a browser on iPhones and iPads this year.

Epic’s lawyer questioned Wright whether this browser-based platform was working well for Microsoft or not. Wright stated that even though it wasn’t Microsoft’s preferred solution, it was the only way for Microsoft to reach out to the iOS mobile users.

Apple claimed that Microsoft earned $600 to $700 million each year because of its relationship with Epic and is supporting Epic Games only because it’s beneficial for its business. Apple further said in its defence that Microsoft has similar rules for its digital store.
