Nadal and Halep cruise through to Wimbledon Round 3

We’ve had a couple of days with a lot of shock results at the 2018 Wimbledon, with the women’s competition losing their #2 seed, Caroline Wozniacki a couple of days back. Also, #6 and #7 men’s seeds Grigor DImitrov and Dominic Thiem faced early exits from this prestigious tournament.

Yesterday, Rafael Nadal made easy progress to the third round of the competition, beating Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets and keeping his hopes alive of making the sixth Wimbledon final of his career. Nadal has won the Wimbledon twice, but the last time he reached the final was back in 2011.

He is the world number one at the moment, but everyone knows that there will be one person vying for another Wimbledon title – Roger Federer. Federer is the top seed in this tournament and rightly so, being the defending champion and having won the tournament a record 8 times!

In the women’s competition, it was another easy progression for world number one, Simona Halep. Remember, she is fresh off her maiden grand slam title at the Roland Garros a month back. She beat China’s Saisai Zheng in straight sets and goes to Round 3, having yet to drop a set in the tournament.

There were a couple of intense matches yesterday, including the one of the unseeded Guido Pella vs #3 seed Marin Cilic. This epic 5-set encounter saw Pella making a fantastic comeback from having lost the first couple of sets to winning 3-2 and setting up a Round 3 match against USA’s Mackenzie McDonald.

#5 seed Juan Martin del Potro progressed easily, and so did former world number one and current #12 seed Novak Djokovic. #8 seed Kevin Anderson also got through, while #4 seed Alexander Zverev is having a tough time against the unseeded Taylor Fritz. He is down 2-1 and the game was suspended to resume later today.
