MUST WATCH: Hollywood flicks on gambling, casinos and thefts

A few Hollywood films mainly gained recognition due to the glamorous scenes shot in casinos and stories about gamblers. Globally, casinos are an exquisite high roller’s affair. Let’s look at a few films that showcased the inner beauty of casinos:

Casino Royale

Casino Royale is a James Bond spy film that released in 2006. The film was not entirely shot in the casino, but the sequence where James Bond has a feisty head on head with his opponent while playing poker in a casino. This sequence of the film was shot in a Montenegro hotel. While talking about the film, the director of Casino Royale, Martin Campbell mentioned, “according to me, the sequence was pretty convincing. What we realized was that it is not just the card games — it’s the stakes. It is also two guys eyeballing one another, basically. That was the secret.”  The film turned out to make the game of poker friendlier and more accessible to a larger audience. Casino Royale has a special place in our hearts and in the history of film making too.

Ocean 11 and Ocean 12

The Ocean’s series is a collection of American heist films that were released between 2001-2018. The series begins with George Clooney in Ocean 1, a master thief who plans an elaborate Las Vegas three-casino-heist to win back his ex-wife. The film’s plot has the protagonist plotting to rob the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand Casinos. With the films being shot in some of the top casinos in Las Vegas, it gives you the opportunity to see the transformations of the casino itself.

The Gambler

The Gambler is a 2014 American crime drama film. The plot revolves around Jim Bennet who uses gambling as a way of self-destruction. James Toback, the writer who was personally accused of allegations of all kinds of problematic behaviour, based his screenplay on his own gambling addiction.

Maverick

The film Maverick is based on a 1959s television series. The film is an American western comedy film that released in 1994. Tracing the journey of a gambler, ‘Bret Maverick’ the film showcases the protagonist as a person who wants to prove himself to be the best card player of his time. The film that based its story on a game lover was considered to be the best of its time due to the easy way in which it transitions from comedy to action and then back again.

The cooler

This 2003 American romantic drama film talks about a professional loser William Macy. Macy’s job is to ruin any high-roller’s hot streak simply by playing at the same craps table. Though the film starts off as a sad character that is also funny in a manner, it emphasizes a recovering gambling addict.

The protagonist is in debt to a casino owner, who tries working off what he owes by being the owner’s go-to cooler. This film is a great work of realism and actually entertains the audience with a different sentiment altogether. Gamblers, gambling, thefts, and much more. These are just a handful among the hundred others that all of us have watched and enjoyed at some point in time.
