Macau’s casino traffic remains almost nil

Almost three months since the coronavirus took over the world reporting over 2 million positive cases and 171k deaths so far. The government quickly took the decision to force shut down the commercial and private sectors and other non-essentials to contain the spread of the harmful virus.

It was in the month of February that the doors of Macau casinos were closed hoping for a quick recovery and reopen borders. As things are getting better, the Indian Asian Gaming (IAG) representatives paid a visit in the city performing a spot check of 11 of the largest resorts in Macau. The team paid a visit to The Venetian Macao, Parisian Macao, Sands Cotai Central, City of Dreams, Wynn Palace, MGM Cotai, Galaxy Macau, Grand Lisboa, Wynn Macau, MGM Macau and StarWorld.

IAG explained that MGM Macau had 10 tables game players and 25 players on slots present, Grand Lisboa had 10 at the table and 14 on slots. The next day the team visited 4 other casinos only to find a total of 92 individuals but this number only kept decreasing day after day. As for now, traveling restrictions have been slightly relaxed, however, visitors are still not ready to enter Macau’s casino.

March wasn’t a favourable month as the virus continued to hurt Macau casinos. The gaming revenue dropped down for 6th straight month tumbling almost up to 80%. Operators in Wynn Macay, Sands China, MGM China, Melco Resorts, SJM Holdings and Galaxy Entertainment were all bleeding between $1.5 million and $4 million each day to keep their properties running.
