Delta Corp petitions Bombay HC for Daman Casino license

Back in 2014, Delta Corp, the owner of Goa’s iconic Deltin Royale Casino, among others, had a 5-star resort in the Union Territory (U.T.) of Daman called ‘The Deltin’. The casino was operated under Delta Corp’s subsidiary, Daman Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. The company had also planned to introduce electronic slot machine games at the resort.

Four and a half years have passed since and the company, till date, has not received any license or regulatory approval from the respective authorities. Following this, Delta Corp, through Daman Hospitality, has finally decided to file a writ petition in Bombay High Court to direct the concerned authorities in Daman to award the required licenses to start operations in Daman, as per Section 13A of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, 1976.

A writ petition is a device in legality that any party can use to get a speedy review of the issue at hand.

The regulatory filing in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on 13^th December, signed by Dilip Vaidya, Delta Corp’s Company Secretary & GMstates that Daman Hospitality has filed the petition, which names the U.T. Administration of Daman and Diu, Administrator of the U.T of Daman and Diu and Director of Tourism, U.T. Administration of Daman and Diu as respondents. The company hasn’t disclosed further details included in petition.

Delta Corp is India’s sole listed gaming company (NSE: DELTACORP) that owns and operates three offshore and one onshore casino in Goa. It also operates two hotels in Goa, one resort in Daman and one casino in Sikkim. In 2016, the company also acquired Adda52, an online platform which hosts real money poker tournaments and cash tables, and is currently one of the giants in the Indian online poker scene.

The move for expanding in Daman, shows an attempt at the replication of the existing and flourishing Goa Casino model. Now it is up to the honourable court to decide whether to direct the regulators to issue licenses or not. The date on which the court will list the issue is not yet disclosed.
