Cricket bookies make new apps despite online gambling ban in AP

The Andhra Pradesh government imposed a ban on online games like rummy, poker and fantasy games in the state that involve financial transactions. On 25 September, the government led by Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, passed an ordinance to amend the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act 1974.

The state government has been trying to crack down on all forms of online gambling in the state of Andhra Pradesh but people have been coming up with relatively newer operations to meet their needs. Recent trends reveal that cricket bookies have been coming up with their own mobile applications in order to meet their needs. The police have uncovered during the raids that bookies conventionally use international betting apps where gambling is legal and some that were locally made.

According to a senior police official, “In many international cricket betting apps, the minimum bet is predominantly INR 50,000 which is difficult to afford for many participants and small-time bookies find it difficult to run the racket. Hence, they (bookies) have come up with their own apps.”

During the raid on 24 October at Murali Nagar, Penamaralu police arrested nine gamblers from an apartment. The group was allegedly using an application called ‘cricket mazza’. An incident that preceded this case was when police busted another app-based cricket betting racket at Machavaram Employees Colony where the accused were allegedly using an app called ‘Avatar’

These are just a few incidents, while police have found several such applications in Andhra Pradesh. The applications seem to have been developed in Hyderabad and the ones that make the apps are predominantly from Vijayawada, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and other urban areas. The police believe that some of these applications are also designed by cyber conmen who use punters’ desperation to cheat them of money. They have warned these techies time and again.  Police further added, “Victims of such cybercrimes don’t even come forward to report these incidents since gambling itself is a crime.”

The ban in Andhra Pradesh was followed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as they have also imposed a ban on online gambling that involve money. We, at Gutshot do not entirely believe in imposing a law on such a thriving community. With stringent rules, a sciety must also be provided enough space to learn, imply, make mistakes and re learn from them.
