Betfair to no longer accept bets from India

When we talk about online sports betting, Betfair happens to be one of the biggest names in the industry. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Betfair is the world’s largest online betting exchange, while also offering online sportsbook, casino, poker and bingo. It’s safe to say that they have coverage all across the globe.

If you are an Indian sports betting enthusiast however, you can take Betfair out from your bookmarked pages as the industry giant is no longer accepting bets placed from India. If you were an existing Betfair user, you would’ve received an email on 17th January, being intimated about the same.

The official cut-off date given in the email was 28th January 2019. The company also informed users to square off any open bets and complete the withdrawals prior to this deadline. For those who didn’t read this email, don’t worry. Pending bets and winnings can still be received.

“Matched bets after this date will be settled once results have been determined and winnings can be collected through Customer Service,” said the email. Betfair didn’t give any specific reason for the shut out of Indian players, but we’re suspecting it has a lot to do with the continuous sports betting developments in our country.

We’re now closer than ever to having legalized sports betting operations in India and very recently, All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) wrote a letter to Prime Mininster Narendra Modi regarding a number of off-shore operators offering online betting services in India.

Betfair is a huge name in the industry and India has a gigantic sports betting market. Surely, the company wouldn’t want to jinx their chances of being a licensed operator in India when gambling is legal in the country. Currently, Betfair.com can’t be accessed from India.

Here’s the message displayed on their website – “Our Software detects that you may be accessing the Betfair website from a country that Betfair does not accept bets from. If you believe that this detection has occurred in error, please Contact us for further assistance.”
