All you need to know about Desi Poker – Teen Patti

Teen Patti literally translates into “three cards”. It is a gambling game originated in India, and is also popularly known as flash. A standard 52 card pack is used, cards ranking from high to low (Ace to 2) with roughly 4-8 players engaged at one time.

With Diwali right around the corner, its time to gamble again and bring your A-game to the table. There is no way beginners luck alone will steer you through this Diwali season, you need to have some basic know-how or a skill set to back it up.

Before you start playing teen patti, it is mandatory to decide the value of the minimum stake. Everyone places this minimum stake in a pot – an accumulation of money which will eventually be won by one of the players. The dealer of the round deals the cards one at a time until everyone is dealt three cards each. The players then bet based on who has the best three card hand. Each player has two options – either to look at their three cards before betting (a seen hand) or to leave their cards face down on the table (a blind hand).

The player to the left of the dealer starts betting, and carries on with each player taking turns to place bets from that point. Each player can either put additional bets in the pot to continue playing or bet nothing and fold. When you fold, you permanently drop out of the game and lose any money you have already put into the deal.

The amount you have to bet at your turn in order to continue playing depends on the running stake. Seen players have to compulsorily bet twice as much as blind players to stay in the game.

The card hierarchy

The ranking of hands from high to low looks something like this:

1. Trail – Three aces are the highest trio and three twos are the lowest trio.
2. Straight run – Three consecutive cards that are of the same suit. Ace can be used in the combination A-2-3, which is the highest straight run. Then comes A-K-Q, K-Q-J and so on right down to 4-3-2.
3. Normal run – Three straight cards, not all of the same suit. A-2-3 is the highest normal run, then comes A-K-Q and so on down to 4-3-2.
4. Colour – Any three cards that are of the same suit. When comparing two colours, compare the highest cards first; if these are equal then compare the second; if these are equal too, proceed to compare the lowest. Thus the highest sequence is A-K-J and the lowest is 5-3-2.
5. Pair – Two cards of the same cards. Between two pairs, compare the pair first, then the odd card if these are equal. The highest pair is therefore A-A-K and the lowest pair is 2-2-3.

High card – Three cards that do not come in any of the above categories. Compare the highest card, then the second highest, then the lowest. The best hand of this type is A-K-J of mixed suits, and the worst is 5-3-2.
