Kolhapur, a city located in the southern part of Maharashtra, saw an extensive gambling raid being conducted recently. The city’s deputy superintendent of police Prerana Katte raided a gambling centre in the heart of the city, arresting a total of 65 people last week.
The raid culminated in the confiscation of valuables worth INR 10 Lakhs. A senior police officer commented, “We got information that people were gambling at a cultural centre near Uma Theatre. A team of policemen rushed to the spot and found people gambling. We arrested 65 people including the owner of the cultural centre and seized INR 12 Lakhs in cash. We have also seized 19 motorcycles.”
Recently, the city saw a raid take place where a video game parlour was raided and subsequently 27 people were arrested, and 29 machines were confiscated. At the time, the police had received a tip-off and had immediately acted on it. Prashant Amrutkar was the deputy superintendent of police during the raid and was conducted at his leadership.
Coming to the raid that happened last week, a police officer said that the cultural centre, the location of the raid, is a two-storey building and its rooftop was being used as a gambling den. There were 12 tables and 64 people playing at it. He said, “They were using three types of plastic coins. The whole area is under CCTV cameras and people sitting downstairs would keep close watch on the proceedings at all the tables. We have seized all the CCTV footage and the DVR.”
Superintendent of police, under whom Katte works, Abhinav Deshmukh said that these illegal matka dens and other gambling sites will receive the bitter end of the whip in due time and he seems serious about it.
