Youngest Captain To Win A Franchise T20 League

Shaheen Afridi is a Pakistani left-handed fast bowler who plays for the Pakistan National Cricket Team and the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Afridi made his International debut in 2018. In the same year, Afridi also made his debut in the PSL, where he bagged five wickets for four runs against Multan Sultan in 2018.

Afridi has never captained any team at any level in his career. Lahore Qalandars appointed Afridi as the captain for the 2022 season, which came as a big surprise to all cricket lovers and experts before the PSL 2022. A decision by Lahore management paid a considerable dividend. They eventually won the title against Multan Sultan.

After winning PSL 2022, Shaheen said, “It was a fantastic achievement to be on the winning side in the PSL. We have been waiting for six years, and I want to congrats the Lahore crowd for supporting us throughout the season. Many people helped me, especially my family, after the loss in the semi-finals against Australia. Hafeez guided me throughout the campaign, mainly in a pressure situation. Thanks a lot to everyone who has supported me in difficult times. It was a fantastic journey with the Qalandars and also had the attitude to fight till the very end.”

Youngest Captain to win a franchise T20 League

Afridi also becomes the youngest captain to win a franchise title in the history of the T20 league against Multan Sultan in PSL 2022 at the age of 21. Surpassing Steve Smith, who holds the record, won the Big Bash League with Sydney Sixers in 2012 at 22.

Afridi was the leading wicket-taker in the HBL PSL. He bagged 20 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 19.75. More importantly, Afridi also captained the Lahore Qalandars for 13 games and won eight (which also includes the playoffs), and lost 5.

No matter what the league is, winning a franchise cup at this age is indeed a big achievement. It’s still a dream for several young guns out there to represent their nation, but Afridi had managed to do both. He not only succeeded in franchise cricket but also managed to dominate international cricket.
