The 3 teams have been drafted after selecting players from a pool gathered by the Cricket West Indies (CWI’s) selection committee. 33 cricketers were picked with 11 players signing up for each team in the 14-player squad. The remaining 3 cricketers are all set to be overseas players and will be revealed soon.
Cricket West Indies President Ricky Skerritt said: “This inaugural Women’s version of the Caribbean Premier League represents a huge upward step for West Indies cricket. I am grateful to all those in the Caribbean Premier League and CWI who made it happen, especially the three pioneering franchises who have so willingly got on board.”

Caribbean Premier League’s CEO, Pete Russell was also quoted saying, “A Women’s CPL is the next logical step as we grow the brand, and we are very pleased that we have been able to make this a reality in 2022. We are grateful to the CWI, the Barbados Royals, the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Trinbago Knight Riders for working with us on this groundbreaking tournament and we look forward to showcasing the tremendous skills of all these talented players.”
West Indies cricket has been working on the project of kickstarting the tournament for quite some time. They are all set to follow into the footsteps of India, Australia, England, and New Zealand who all already have conducted women’s T20 leagues. India’s Board of Control for Cricket in India is also rumored to launch a Women’s Indian Premier League in the upcoming years.
The upcoming tournament will also act as a solid platform for West Indies cricketers to begin their preparations for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. They won it back in 2016 and will be eager to walk away with the coveted trophy once again in South Africa.
