Cricket South Africa (CSA) are set to kick-off the first edition of their own T20 league after the failures of various tournaments like the Global T20 League and the Mzansi Super League. However, the South African cricket board learnt from their mistakes done in the last time with SA20 consisting of cash-rich investors and in-demand players.
The inaugural edition of SA20 will have 33 matches being played during the tournament with each team set to square off each other twice – on a home-and-away basis. At the end of the league stages, 4 teams will qualify for the semi-finals with the final to follow as the CSA is yet to release the complete schedule.
The CSA is doing all it can for SA20 which is all set to kick-off soon after the successful completion of the first SA20 auction which had 533 players going under the hammer. Several players were sold for a whooping price while many were unsold despite having potential with the squads locked in.

However, the SA20 has been scheduled to take place within the same time frame as ILT20. Some dates of the tournament also clash with Australia’s Big Bash League and the Bangladesh Premier League. It has resulted in questions being raised over player availability in some cases.
Key players like Rashid Khan and Liam Livingstone are signed up for SA20 as well as the Big Bash League, whose dates coincide with South Africa’s league. They are expected to give priority to SA20 over BBL as they had signed for the South African league first instead of their Australian counterparts.
It is also worth noting that these players would have recently featured at the ICC T20 World Cup which ends in November 2022. Constant back to back games and playing under high pressure situations while featuring at the biggest stages increases the injury risk for the players. Any injuries to big stars will see franchises across various leagues being affected.
