Rohit Sharma boasts an excellent record as the captain of India since taking over from Virat Kohli in 2022. He particularly excels in the One Day Internationals (ODI), and the Men in Blue played some of the best cricket in the format under his captaincy. The 36-year-old led India to the Asia Cup 2023 win and ODI World Cup 2023 finals. He was also named the captain of ICC’s World Cup 2023 XI, including as many as six Indians.
The recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup 2023 was India’s biggest chance to win a major ICC trophy in nearly 10 years. The Men in Blue last emerged victorious in an ICC event while playing for the Champions trophy in 2013, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
They have been in the hunt for an ICC trophy ever since but failed to make it count, with the 2011 World Cup winners losing the semi-finals or finals ever since. It was also the perfect occasion for Rohit Sharma to etch his name in the history books as one of India’s most successful captains in what could well be his last World Cup appearance.

Currently 36 years old, it would not be wrong to say that Rohit Sharma is at the fag end of his career. The question now remains: when could Rohit Sharma call the curtains on his career?
Before the India vs New Zealand semi-final clash in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Sharma was questioned about his retirement during the pre-match press conference. SportsTak quoted him saying, “Don’t have much time to think about my journey. Probably after 19 November, I’ll think about it right now; it’s just about the business.”
With the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 finally over, the Indian team might set their eyes on the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be played in the United States of America.
The management will be eager to build a strong core of a team that will play together for the future years. Fitness issues and reflexes also come into play when players cross the age barrier of 35, citing the number of games being played now. With players like Kohli and Sharma often seen taking breaks from multiple series over the last two years, their longevity remains under the scanner.
The growth of the Indian Premier League has led to an abundance of talent coming through, with players like Yashashwi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan waiting in the ranks for their opportunities. Considering all these factors, seeing Rohit Sharma retirement in the next 2-3 years would not be wrong. It remains interesting to see what the future holds for the smashing Indian opener.
