Dinesh Karthik did not contribute much with the bat during India’s recent loss to Australia in the First T20I at Mohali. One of the key reasons for the same was Axar Patel batting ahead of the wicket keeper at number six in the last match.
The 37-year-old has been drafted into the Indian T20I team to play the designated role of finisher. His batting prowess and ability to clear the boundary line during the death overs are the key reasons that led to his comeback in the national team.
However, the southpaw was not able to make much any impact in the previous game against Australia. He played just five deliveries during his short stay at the crease and scored six runs off them before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis in the 18th over.
Despite not faring well with the bat, the wicket-keeper did a solid job behind the stumps. Dinesh Karthik managed to take a couple of crucial catches that dismissed the likes of off Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell on Umesh Yadav’s bowling to push India back in the game during the match situation.

After the game, Matthew Hayden questioned Karthik’s role and asked why Axar Patel walked out to bat after Suryakumar Yadav’s dismissal. He said, “I don’t want to seem like I’m demeaning him, but Dinesh Karthik should really be batting more.”
Speaking with Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar also spoke on the Indian think tank’s decision to push Karthik down the order. He said, “If you think that he (Dinesh Karthik) is a better batsman than Axar Patel, then he should come into bat even if it is the 12th or 13th over. All this thing about coming in only for the last 3-4 overs is not the kind of thing that should be looked at. We should not be going by theory.”
With no significant impact to the scoresheet, the Indian team think tank missed a trick with regards to Dinesh Karthik. The Tamil Nadu batter should have been asked to bat after the Men in Blue lost a wicket in the 14th over in the last game. It would have given him some settle in and then unleash his shots in the final few overs. A swap in Karthik’s batting positions in the 2nd T20I against Australia can do the trick. It remains interesting to see if the 37 year old can live upto his reputation in the do-or-die clash on Friday.
