The Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was trying to hold back tears while KL Rahul sank to his knees. Mohammed Siraj couldn’t hold back and was being comforted by Jasprit Bumrah; Mohammed Shami walked back dejected, and Virat Kohli was hiding his face in his cap.
India’s loss to Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final was devastating for the entire nation. Images and videos of a jam-packed Narendra Modi stadium with fans walking off in the middle of Australia’s innings presented great evidence of the dejection everyone felt during the game.
India will have to wait for another ODI World Cup trophy for four more years, and as the nation recovers from the heartbreak. Let’s look at five reasons why Sharma’s men failed against Australia.
One of the biggest reasons India failed in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final was their inability to score runs in the middle overs. Sharma continued to play attacking strokes to score a 31-ball 47 despite Shubman Gill’s dismissal before getting himself out in the 10th over.

The Indian skipper pushed his team to a comfortable position as the scoreboard read 80/2 at the end of the first powerplay. However, the next stage of the innings was when India lost the match.
Kohli and Rahul steadied the ship after Shreyas Iyer was dismissed in the 11th over. But the duo failed to attack the Australian bowlers and could only score 35 runs between 11-20 overs. India also scored just 37 runs in the next 21- 30 over phase, which didn’t help their case.
India went through a boundary drought in the middle overs despite a promising start. The Men in Blue struggled to find boundaries after the first 10 overs, which significantly hampered their run rate. Sharma was the only batter to score a six in the first innings. After his wicket, not a single batter managed to clear the rope. This sharp decline in boundary scoring saw India score only 13 boundaries and three sixes amid the entire innings making their score of 241 runs seem inadequate.

Despite struggling to score on a slow pitch, they were 148/4 after the dismissal of Kohli, who scored 54 off 63 balls. While most fans expected Suryakumar Yadav to join KL Rahul, the Indian team management sent Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. This move failed as the all-rounder scored only nine runs off 22 balls before returning to the hut. His inability to accelerate the run rate affected the 2011 World Cup winners’ score in the first innings.
The bowlers played a pivotal role during India’s impressive 10-match winning streak as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj provided breakthroughs for the team. However, Sharma decided to open the bowling with Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. While it seemed to work in the start, as Australia was reduced to 47/3, not giving the new ball to Siraj proved detrimental. Not bowling Siraj early resulted in the pacer being less effective when he bowled with a slightly older ball during the middle overs.
India had Australia under tremendous pressure at 47/3 early despite posting a modest total of 241. The early breakthroughs by Bumrah and Shami, alongside a packed crowd cheering for the Men in Blue, put Pat Cummin’s men under tremendous pressure.
However, the Rahul Dravid-coached side failed to capitalise on the advantageous situation as Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58) put on a historic 192-run partnership to not only steer Australia away from danger but also win their sixth ICC ODI World Cup title.
