Who Will Replace KL Rahul In India’s WTC Squad?

The Indian cricket team suffered back-to-back blows ahead of their World Test Championship final against Australia. Lucknow Super Giant (LSG) star Jaydev Unadkat suffered from an injury while bowling at the nets, and fellow teammate and captain KL Rahul also hurt himself during their team’s clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Ekana Cricket Stadium in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rahul sustained an injury on his right thigh during the match against RCB. Despite coming out to Rahul bat at No 11 in that clash, the wicketkeeper batter was ruled out of his team’s next clash against Chennai Super Kings. While the extent of his injuries is uncertain, questions arise over his availability for the tournament. Reports also state that the Indian Test team vice-captain could also miss out on playing in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 Final.

The WTC Final 2023 is all set to take place at the Oval between 7-11 June, with 12th June named as the reserve day for the match. While announcing India’s squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 against Australia, the BCCI selection committee selected Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and Sarfaraz Khan as standby players for the one-off test. While Sarfaraz and Gaikwad were named as batters, Kishan joined the list as a wicketkeeper batter.

Citing KL Rahul’s injury, one of Gaikwad, Kishan and Khan could find himself propelled into the Indian team squad for the World Test Championship final. However, despite making it to the Indian squad for the WTC 2023 final, it will be difficult for any player to break into the playing XI, citing India’s combination.

KL Rahul’s replacement in India’s playing XI for WTC 2023 Final? 

As per reports, Ajinkya Rahane, who is making a comeback to the Indian test team after a year, is the front-runner to replace KL Rahul and earn a spot in the playing XI against Australia. Featuring for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023, The Mumbai-based batter has been in solid form. He has been scoring a lot of runs for fun and at a fantastic strike rate, making him one of the best Indian batsmen in the tournament.

His cool-headed approach and skill to take on pace and spin as well as play the anchor role makes him a valuable asset. With India’s batting line-up struggling to come up with consistent performances, Rahane’s inclusion in the Test team as a replacement for KL Rahul is sure to provide the much-needed stability and balance.
