Who is Mukesh Kumar? India’s New Pacer Selected For SA ODIs

Bengal speedster Mukesh Kumar earned a national team call up on Sunday as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Men in Blue squad for the upcoming three-match ODIs against the Proteas. The All-India Selection Committee has given a lot of fresh faces to shine for the national team with many senior players set to fly off to Australia and being their preparations for the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup.

Who is Mukesh Kumar?

Mukesh Kumar got his chance to be included in the squad after impressing in the domestic circuit. He had a fantastic outing in the Ranji Trophy claiming 20 wickets in 5 matches for Bengal. He also impressed for India A during their recent matches against New Zealand A before continuing his purple patch for the Rest of India squad in the ongoing Irani Trophy clash against Saurashtra.

The right-arm pacer claimed four wickets in the first innings with his spell propelling his him to earn a spot over the likes of Umran Malik for the ODIs series against South Africa. So far, the 28-year-old has claimed 109 wickets in 30 first-class matches.

Mukesh Kumar in IPL?

He is yet to make his debut in the Indian Premier League and his selection for the national team could see a lot of IPL franchises keep a tab on him ahead of the auction.  Mukesh Kumar T20 stats sees him take 19 wickets in 17 matches, while boosting a decent economy of 7.25.

He is set to be part of the Indian team which will be led by Shikhar Dhawan once again for the ODI series against the Proteas. The opener will be assisted by Shreyas Iyer, who has been named as Dhawan’s deputy over Sanju Samson. The Kerala based wicketkeeper was expected to be given the vice captaincy following his recent success as the captain of India A where his side managed to record a clean sweep series win over the Kiwis. Another interesting decision was the omission of Prithvi Shaw, who was also overlooked by selectors despite being in solid form for the SA ODIs.
