The Indian team selectors are set to get together and shortlist the Men in Blues’ squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. It will be one of the major decisions the think tank will have to make before putting together a list of 15 players that will feature in the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, later this year.
The Men in Blue are expected to build their Asia Cup squad with the best picks available at hand with an eye on the ICC T20 World Cup. Most of the players pick themselves and as things stand, with 12 slots already cemented.
The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant are automatic picks when it comes to batters and wicket keepers. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja pick themselves up as India’s top white ball two allrounders.
Moving onto the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal is almost guaranteed a place in the Indian squad with Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel likely to be the three fast bowlers. Let’s have a look at 3 players who could make it to the squad for the 6-nation tournament.
Deepak Hooda
The middle order batter impressed during his stint with the Lucknow SuperGiants in Indian Premier League 2022. He featured for the Men in Blue against Ireland and impressed with figures of a 47* and 104. So far, he has scored 215 runs in seven T20Is while recording a strike rate of 170.63 and an average of 71.66. His ability to also deliver with the ball as a fifth or sixth bowling option makes a solid case for him to be a part of the Asia Cup squad.
Arshdeep Singh
The 23-year-old caught the eye in the IPL emerging as one of the fast-bowling talents. Impressive outings in the tournament over the last few years saw him earn national team call up with the left arm pacer making his international debut against England last month.

Despite playing just over four T20Is for India, Arshdeep Singh has made a name for himself picking up 6 wickets while registering a strike rate of 15.5 and an economy rate of 6.51 The young speedster has grabbed every opportunity presented to him with both hands and looks likely to be a firm member of the Indian contingent.
Ravi Bishnoi / Axar Patel/ R Ashwin
Ravi Bishnoi has played 7 T20Is and been around the circuit for quite some time. He has registered nine wickets while delivering at an economy rate of 7.32. The spinner is surely one of India’s future prospects and could be picked for the Asia Cup. However, he is likely to face tough competition from Axar Patel.
The latter is a like-for-like back-up for Jadeja. The all rounder impressed with his batting ability in the last few games and could be drafted in the final 15 of the Indian team for the upcoming tournaments. However, with India already boasting the likes of Jadeja in the team, a slot for Axar seems unlikely.
R Ashwin’s resurgence in the shortest format of the game makes him a dark horse to be in the Indian team for the upcoming major tournaments. The off spinner has solid wicket-taking potential while also boosting the ability to deliver economical spells especially against teams with several left-hand batters.
