Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has revealed how he is not convinced of seeing Rishabh Pant bat at number five for the Men in Blue. He feels that the young wicket keeper batter should be used as a top order batter in the shortest format of the game.
Pant has once again failed to make most of the opportunities presented to him in T20 Internationals. He has continued to display poor form in the shortest format of the game and was seen playing a reckless shot to Shadab Khan in his latest Asia Cup outing.
The 24-year-old was sent back to the pavilion after playing a poor shot which ended his stay on the crease with Rishabh Pant managing just 14 runs from 12 balls. After the dismissal, Indian team skipper Rohit Sharma was visibly angry at the wicket keeper batter and was seen lashing out on him in the dressing room.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant was dropped from the Indian team with Dinesh Karthik featuring in the first clash of Asia Cup against Pakistan. However, he was given the opportunity to play after Rahul Dravid and co decided to bring a left-handed batter in the middle following Ravindra Jadeja’s injury. Despite getting a chance to play in the middle order, Rishabh Pant has failed to impress in the two matches he has featured in during the ongoing Asia Cup so far.
Ex India cricketer Wasim Jaffer shared his thoughts on Pant claiming how the wicket keeper should be used as a top order batter in the T20 matches. The former opener reasons his thought process by stating that Rishabh Pant can take on the opponent in the powerplay, something which has not been able to do while batting at number five.
Speaking on CricTracker’s Run Ki Runneeti’, he said, “Team India now needs to think whether Rishabh Pant justifies that spot or not! I’m up for seeing Rishabh batting up in the order. I think that’s the ideal place for him to bat in T20Is. He can play aggressive shots right from the start in ODIs and Tests and he’ll only get that opportunity in T20Is when he’s batting in the powerplay.”
“Once he (Rishabh Pant) gets the runs in the powerplay, then he’s set to score a lot of runs. However, when he’s batting at number five and the field is quite open up, hitting sixes right from the start isn’t easy. That’s why I’m not convinced that the number five spot is ideal for him in T20Is,” Wasim Jaffer added.
