Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram has shared his thoughts on Shaheen Afridi’s absence from the Men in Green squad at the Asia Cup. The 56-year-old has called that 22-year-old’s unavailability is a major blow with the left arm pacers’ knee injury preventing him from playing in the 6-nation tournament.
Speaking to Star Sports on Tuesday before the Asia Cup, Wasim Akram revealed how Afridi’s unavailability will affect the variation in Pakistan’s bowling attack. He said, “Shaheen Afridi will be much missed. He is significant because of the new ball. In this format, you must limit the opposition by taking early wickets, which is what the accomplishes. In all formats, he assaults the stumps.”
“He was chastised for not taking a break, although he is just 22. He has a knee injury that takes time to heal, and you are always afraid it will come back. He is one of the top three bowlers in the world, so this is a major loss for Pakistan. There is still pace (in the bowling department), but little variation as they are all right-handers,” Wasim Akram added.

The former cricketer also went on to speak on the constant comparison between Babar Azam and former India captain Virat Kohli. The Pakistan’s all format captain has been one of the best batters in world cricket which raises the constant comparison between him and the Indian counterpart. Akram feels that comparisons between the duo is only natural while claiming how Babar is hungry, fit and in great shape to become the No. 1 batter across all formats.
While praising Babar the 56 year old remarked that the same cannot be said about Kohli who has been struggling with the bat since the start of 2020. Wasim Akram said, “The parallels are only natural. People used to compare Inzamam to Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar while we were playing. “It was Sunil Gavaskar, Javed Miandad, G Vishwanath, and Zaheer Abbas before that.”
He ended with, “Because he possesses the appropriate approach, Babar has been incredibly consistent. He is both hungry and fit. He is still a young captain, but he is learning quickly. Comparisons with Virat Kohli, on the other hand, are questionable.”
