Washington Sundar is an Indian professional cricketer who currently plays for the Indian Premier League side Gujarat Titans. Sundar has established himself as one of India’s best all-rounders in recent years and has been given chances to represent the Indian cricket team on some of the biggest occasions. He has been incredible on numerous occasions at both the domestic and international stages but has yet to establish himself as a regular starter. Washington Sundar’s father feels that the opportunities he is given are very inconsistent and that he is not backed by the teams he plays for despite performing well. This article talks about Washington Sundar’s performances and his father talking about the lack of opportunities his son has received.

Washington Sundar was one of India’s best players in the fourth test game against England. He put in a standout performance in the second inning when India was trailing. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan both lost their wickets without scoring a single run, putting pressure on India. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul managed to steady the ship, but everyone thought India would be in trouble after Rahul lost his wicket. However, Washington Sundar walked in at number five and managed to build partnerships with both Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja and scored 101 runs in 206 balls without losing his wicket to help India manage a draw against England in the fourth test.

Washington Sundar has put in such performances in the past as well, but he ends up being mysteriously dropped despite doing well. Washington Sundar’s father spoke about the lack of chances his son gets despite performing well. He feels that his son is not being given opportunities to prove his worth for both the Indian cricket team and for his IPL team, the Gujarat Titans. He said:
“Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn’t get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances. My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year.”

“He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this, and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now. Even his current team Gujarat Titans don’t give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls. Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn’t been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket”
Given Washington Sundar’s performance against England in the fourth test, it is very unlikely that he will get dropped for the final test. Sundar has performed well with both the bat and the ball, and Shubman Gill will simply not be able to justify dropping him. If Washington Sundar does end up missing the final test match, it will just back up Sundar’s father’s statement about how his son is not given chances consistently, and it is unfair that he gets dropped after putting in brilliant performances. Only time will tell if Washington Sundar does end up participating in the final test match between India and England, but it is quite likely that he will start for India.
