Waqar Younis Backs Pakistan For A “Really Good” T20 World Cup

Former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis believes the Men in Green have a great shot at winning the T20 World Cup. The highly anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is set to be held in Australia, later this year. Pakistan had a great tournament at the 2021 T20 World Cup with the sub continental team managing to reach the semi-finals in UAE.

They fared well in the shortest format of the game having lost only 1 game since their clash against Australia at the World Cup. Currently slotted third on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, Pakistan will head Down Under riding on their excellent performances and focus on going all the way to pocket their maiden T20 triumph.

Waqar Younis comments on Pakistan’s T20 team

Speaking with ICC Digital, Waqar Younis was quoted saying, “We stand a really good chance of doing well at this World Cup. The pitches in Australia are generally very good batting pitches and Pakistan do have good batters who can really play well in these conditions.”

The Men in Green boasts two of the best T20 batters in their all-format captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Younis thinks that the duo will play a key role for the team in Australia. He spoke how the Men in Green’s captain could be the trump card at the upcoming ICC event.

The former Pakistan star said, “Babar is definitely going to be the key batter at the top of the order. I think he (Babar) will have the impact that he has always had and then of course Rizwan is playing very well and the bowling attack they have got it one of the best in the world.”

The 50-year-old also goes on to speak on the Pakistan bowling attack. He feels that the bowlers are going under the radar due to the batting prowess. Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf have experience of playing in Australia when they featured in the Big Bash League. Pakistan’s’ spin duo of Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz have been impressive.

Younis said, “We have tried about six or seven fast bowlers in the last year or so and they are all going really well. I feel that Haris Rauf and Shaheen (Afridi) will be pivotal, but let’s not forget Hasan Ali either as he has been bowling very decent. Pakistan’s fast bowling attack is very good and they can mix it up with Shadab and Nawaz as they are good spinners also.”

Pakistan will kickstart their ICC T20 World Cup campaign against India. The sub continental archrivals will square off at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 23 October in a highly anticipated encounter.  The Men in Green’s last outing against India saw them register a 10-wicket victory during the T20 World Cup 2021. It was their first even win against the Men in Blue in an T20I ICC event.
