The KL Rahul-led cricket team recorded a massive win over Afghanistan in the 5th match of the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4s. India banked on modern-day batting great Virat Kohli who scored his a remarkable century on Thursday. He dominated the Afghanistan bowlers to score his maiden T20I 100 and end with unbeaten 122 runs off 61 balls which included 12 fours and 6 sixes.
The 33-year-old was named the player of the match for his outing against Afghanistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as the Men in Blue recorded a 101-run victory over Mohammad Nabi’s team.
After the game, Kohli sat down for a candid chat with current team captain Rohit Sharma who was rested for the Asia Cup 2022 clash. Reaching the three-figure mark after precisely 1,020 days, Kohli went on to admit on scoring a century in a format “he least expected to.”

Speaking to Sharma, the middle order batter stated, “Last two and a half years have taught me a lot. I am going to turn 34 in a month. So those angry celebrations are a thing of the past. Actually I was shocked. This is the last format I thought. It was an accumulation of a lot of things. The team has been open and helpful.”
The 2011 World Cup winner emphasized on the support his actress wife Anushka Sharma provided during the rocky time and dedicated his 100 to her and his little daughter Vamika. Kohli added, “I know there was a lot of stuff going outside. And I kissed my ring. You see me standing here because one person has put things in perspective for me. That’s Anushka. This hundred is for her and for our little daughter Vamika as well. When you have someone next to you having conversations putting things in perspective, like Anushka has been… when I came back I was not desperate.”
Referring to his month long break from cricket, Kohli admitted how it was for the first time that the batting icon did not hold his cricket bat for nearly a month in nearly 10 years. The massively popular cricketer revealed, “Six weeks off I was refreshed. I realized how tired I was. Competitiveness doesn’t allow it, but this break allowed me enjoy the game again.”
Before his interaction with the Indian team captain, the former captain had a lot to say during the post-match presentation. Kohli shared how spending time away from cricket helped in observing a lot of things about himself. The father of one, also goes on to credit his wife by stating how she stood by him in tough times while providing guidance.
He revealed, “Firstly I am grateful for how the day went today. Time away from the game gave me a good chance to sit back and observe a lot of things about me. I mentioned one special person – Anushka – who stood by me through these tough times. She has seen the absolute raw side of me throughout all these months. She was the one putting things in perspective for me, kept giving me the right kind of guidance, and vision moving forward, and I came back into the system as a relaxed person.”

The former Indian team captained further spoke about his game and said, “It was just about enjoying the game, understanding the game and what God blessed you with. Today was the build of the last few games, I batted out of my skin, to be honest, and I surprised myself. What surprised me was my 60s became failures; quite shocking for me, batting pretty well and contributing but doesn’t seem to be enough.
I can’t really pinpoint anything to anyone as I said God has blessed me with good things in the past and that’s why I am in this position where these things can be spoken about. I have absolutely no shame in admitting that God is blessing us all with everything in our destiny, we just have to work hard. So I went back to the drawing board, came back fresh and excited.”
Thank you for all the love and support throughout the Asia Cup campaign. We will get better and come back stronger. Untill next time ❤️🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/yASQ5SbsHl

Later on, the now Delhi-based star spoke on the team environment and the support players gave him by keeping him relaxed and asking him to play his natural game. “The team environment has had great communication with me, kept me relaxed and kept my perspective right. When I came back there was not much information coming my way, they just said bat and it was a matter of getting into the space of enjoyment,” Kohli added.
Before signing off he also revealed how several cricket pundits gave him suggestions amid his poor batting. Kohli said, “I have had many suggestions, a lot of advice has come my way; people were telling me I was doing this wrong, that wrong, I picked out all the videos from the best time I had. Same initial movement, same approach towards the ball and it was just what was happening inside my head I wasn’t able to explain it to anyone. At the end of the day you know as an individual where you stand, people will have their opinions but they cannot feel what you are feeling. I am very grateful for that time and needed it to change my perspective.”
