Former India star and World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar has displayed support for out-of-form Virat Kohli. He has been vocal about backing the 33-year-old, who has been under scrutiny for quite some time given his poor form. The Delhi based batter has not been at his best in the recent past and struggled to get going in all three formats of the game. Kohli’s last century came well over 30 months ago as questions hover over his position in India’s T20I playing XI.
Gavaskar shared how he feels that the Indian batter has been at the center of criticism and received more judgment than other players. He goes on to explain his point by sharing how India’s all format captain Rohit Sharma is facing troubles too, but isn’t criticized as much as Kohli. The 73-year-old also went on to add how Indian batters are likely to fail occasionally given the new attacking approach the team has decided to adopt under Rahul Dravid.
Speaking with SportsTak, Gavaskar was quoted saying, “I don’t understand why no one speaks out when Rohit Sharma or anyone else isn’t among the runs? The template that the team is using now of playing attacking cricket, you are bound to fail when it doesn’t come off. We have a good enough selection committee to think about this and take a call.”
Gavaskar revealed that the upcoming next ODI series against England will act as a solid platform for Kohli to get back in form. He spoke how the ODI’s are a great format for the former Indian skipper and could help him get back to his best.

The 1983 World Cup winner was quoted saying, “Yes, the ODI series has come at the right time for him. He can get a few overs to get set and understand the conditions and whether there’s swing in the air or bounce in the pitch. “
He added, “So I think this is a great format for Kohli. When your team has embraced this template of attacking cricket, maybe Kohli must have thought that he needs to get as many runs as possible in lesser deliveries so that it will be beneficial for both him and his team.”
Gavaskar also shared that the Indian team management need not be in a hurry while shortlisting players for the T20 World Cup. He goes on to add how India will feature in the Asia Cup before the ICC event sharing how that tournament will help the Indian management in selecting the ideal team for Australia.
The 73-year-old said, “I still feel there are about two more months before you have to announce your T20 World Cup squad. There are good teams who will play in Asia Cup and you can decide on your team based on the performance then. No need to jump the gun at the moment.”
