Virat Kohli Becomes All-Time Leading Run-Getter In T20 History

Virat Kohli continues to break records in the shortest format of the game. The Indian batter recently went past Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run scorer in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. He achieved the feat during India’s clash against Bangladesh in their 4th game of the tournament.

Virat Kohli edged past Jayawardene’s score of 1016 after tucking away Taskin Ahmed for a single towards the on-side in the 7th over of the first innings. It is also worth noting that the former Indian captain got to the milestone in just 23 innings, eight innings quicker than the former Sri Lankan cricketer.

The 33-year-old suffered a dip in form for the last few years. However, he managed to find his mojo back in the Asia Cup 2022. He started to get back to his lethal best and went on to smash his maiden T20I hundred against Afghanistan.

With the T20 World Cup 2022, a lot of expected from Virat Kohli. He entered the tournament being the only batsman in history to win two ‘Man of the Tournament’ awards in the ICC competition. Being a part of 4 T20 World Cup campaigns, Kohli scored 845 runs in 21 innings.

Before T20 World Cup, he was the fifth-highest run-getter in the tournament history, needing just 171 runs to claim the numero uno spot! Virat Kohli did not disappoint as he started off with probably one of his best innings across all formats of cricket. His unbeaten 82 off 53 balls against Pakistan at the MCG in front of an audience of over 90,000 was described as the best T20I innings ever by many cricket fans.

Sixty-two runs against the Netherlands propelled Kohli nearer to the thousand mark, and despite a minor failure against South Africa, Virat managed to break Mahela Jayawardene’s record against Bangladesh. His innings against his Asian counterparts see Kohli register 13 fifties from just 23 innings in the T20 World Cup. He has the highest number of runs, the highest average as well as the most 50+ scores in the tournament. If that wasn’t enough, He is also the only player to have 200 + runs in the T20 World Cup 2022.

The former Indian team captain clearly loves playing in Australia, especially in Adelaide. He has played ten matches in Adelaide, scoring a jaw-dropping 907 runs. Amongst the four ODIs, he played at the stadium, Virat Kohli has smashed 244 runs which includes two centuries. In 2 T20Is, he has scored 154 runs while remaining not out during both occasions. Moving onto the longest format of the game, the 33 year old has scored 509 runs at the venue which includes three hundreds.

Here’s what he had to say on his love affair with the Adelaide after the Bangladesh clash! Virat Kohli said, “As soon as I knew the WC is in Australia, I was grinning from ear to ear. Good cricketing shots will be the key here is what I know. Hitting through the line is what I do in every format. It is just an extension for me. I love playing at this ground. This makes me feel at home. When I come to Adelaide, I am meant to enjoy myself and keep batting.”
