Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been making the headlines recently thanks to his performance in the Indian Premier League. He first came into the spotlight when news spread that a 13-year-old cricketer, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, was set to take part in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Rajasthan Royals ended up buying him for ₹1.1 Crore, and he recently made his debut in the Indian Premier League for them. However, his performance in the Indian Premier League has caused people to question whether the youngster is really 14 years old or if he has been fooling everyone by indulging in age fraud. This article talks about the controversy surrounding Suryavanshi.

Doubts about Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s age started to surface when ex-Pakistan cricketer, Junaid Khan, started to question whether Suryavanshi was really 14 years old. Junaid Khan actually brought this up during India’s U-19 Asia Cup campaign. He posted a video of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s six-hitting ability with the caption, “Can a 13-year-old kid really hit such a long six???”. However, Vaibhav’s father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, was quick to defend his son, pointing to the bone tests he had done in the past. He said:
“When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo age test. My son has gone through all the official age verification processes mandated by the BCCI. We even consented to a bone density test two years ago when he was selected for the U-14 state side. Everything came back consistent with his stated age. It’s heartbreaking to see a child go through this. Instead of celebrating his talent, people are trying to tear him down.”

However, these questions were followed by an old social media post resurfacing. This post, which was made in May 2022, saw a childhood friend of Vaibhav wish him a happy 14th birthday. But if Vaibhav Suryavanshi turned 14 in May 2022, that would make him 16 and set to become 17. This post restarted the rumours that Vaibhav Suryavanshi had indulged in age fraud. More anomalies followed this incident. A short interview clip from a local tournament in 2021 surfaced in which Vaibhav, responding to a question about school, casually stated that he was 13. Again, this would contradict his IPL age listing by at least two years.

It is due to various such incidents that people have started doubting whether Vaibhav Suryavanshi is really 14 years old. Talks of his age were put into the spotlight once again after Vaibhav’s incredible performance against the Gujarat Titans on 28th April 2025. The Indian youngster played an outstanding inning, scoring a century in just 35 balls to score the second-fastest century in IPL history and the fastest by an Indian player. After seeing him perform so well, people started to question his age once again, and if things continue like this, only an official investigation into Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s age will settle this debate once and for all.
At the moment, neither the BCCI nor the IPL has initiated an official probe into Vaibhav’s age. But the pressure is mounting. With every run he scores and every record he breaks, the debate grows more intense. Is he truly the next Sachin Tendulkar? a boy wonder who deserves nothing but admiration? Or is he a carefully constructed myth, built on manipulated documents and a family desperate to crack the big leagues? Only time will tell us if Vaibhav Suryavanshi is really 14 years old and a spectacular talent, but given his recent performances, there will likely be a check conducted to make sure that Vaibhav Suryavanshi is indeed a 14-year-old prodigy.
