Usman Khawaja Claims That ODI Cricket Is “Dying A Slow Death”

Australia star Usman Khawaja has stated that One Day Internationals is “dying a slow death” while adding how he is not surprised with Ben Stokes’ decision to quit playing One Day cricket. The English all-rounder decided to call it quits and hang up his boots in ODIs after citing the physical and mental demands of playing back-to-back matches.

The English test team captain shared that the authorities can’t treat players like “cars”. He also emphasized how too much cricket will impact the players’ ability to remain competitive at the international level across all three formats.

Usman Khawaja has not played white ball matches since 2019 . He has claimed that the international calendar needs to have some changes with 50-over matches most likely to give way. ESPNCricInfo has quoted the 35-year-old saying, “My own personal opinion – I know a few of the guys are very similar – you’ve got Test cricket. Which is the pinnacle, you’ve got T20 cricket. Which obviously has leagues around the world, great entertainment, everyone loves it, and then there’s one-day cricket.”

He added, “I feel like that’s probably the third-ranked out of all of them. I think personally one-day cricket is dying a slow death…There’s still the World Cup, which I think is really fun and it’s enjoyable to watch. But other than that, even myself personally, I’m probably not into one-day cricket as much either.”

The opener’s thoughts came after South Africa decided to forfeit their ODI series against Australia and jeopardize their spot in the 2023 World Cup while prioritizing their own domestic upcoming T20 league. Usman Khawaja goes on share how the future of Test cricket is very bright. Australia are set to take on the likes of West Indies and South Africa in the summer. Pat Cummins’ side will be hoping to cement a slot in the World Test Championship final, which is scheduled to be played next year.

Usman Khawaja said, “The majority of people I talk to still love Test cricket. It’s my favourite format. Think Test cricket still has a very strong presence so don’t really see that going anywhere. Think both [Tests and T20] can be quite easily balanced, but then you ask yourself the question, does one-day cricket give.”
