The Indian women’s team were the clear favourites to win the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final. They have been absolutely dominant in this tournament, having won seven of the previous eight editions, and they looked on the perfect track to add yet another title to their cabinet. However, Sri Lanka had other plans. While they had lost the final five times previously to India, they put it completely out of their mind and put in one of their best performances ever to push past India and lift the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup.
India won the toss and decided to bat first. They started well, getting 44 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay. While India looked comfortable after the start, a couple of quick wickets saw the tide turn towards Sri Lanka. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur lost her wicket soon after, and it looked like a very troubling situation for India. However, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues made a crucial stand, adding 41 runs in 25 balls.
Mandhana ended up making 60 runs in 47 balls, delivering yet another clutch innings for India. Richa Ghosh took the finishing part upon herself, displaying some amazing hitting prowess, and scored 30 runs off just 14 balls, helping India power to a final score of 165.

While India had managed to put up a defendable score on the board, they would need quick wickets to upset the Sri Lanka batting lineup, and that is exactly what they got. A mix-up between Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu in the second over saw India get an early breakthrough via a runout. However, after this wicket, they were unable to trouble Sri Lanka at all. Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama built a fantastic partnership, completely removing any pressure and completely killing the game.

Athapaththu lost her wicket in the 12th over, but Kavisha Dilhari stepped up and finished the game alongside Samarwickrama. The three of them ended up making 160 runs amongst themselves (Chamari Athapaththu 61(43), Harshitha Samawickrama 69(51), and Kavisha Dilhari 30(16)). The Sri Lanka top order proved to be too much for the Indian bowling attack to handle, and in the end, Sri Lanka ended up winning the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final quite comfortably.
