It’s the start of the brand new South African T20 franchise league and we’re expecting fireworks right from Day 1 of this competition. The tournament is going to be played between six regional teams and at various venues, and viewers from around the world have been waiting for the first game of SA20 League 2023 to kick off on 10th Jan 2023.
The Gutshot team headed over to Twitter to take a look at what people have been talking about ahead of SA20 League 2023, and there’s a buzz happening alright! New players, new teams, new jerseys and captains, new rules too, and a fanbase from the world’s biggest T20 competition – the Indian Premier League (IPL). See what some people are talking about the upcoming SA20 League:
Just few hours to go! I'm really excited to see @MICapeTown performance in #SA20League and I hope our champions will achieve what we are expecting something big in this campaign. Let's go CHAMPS and CHEERS 🔥💪👍

Firstly, the SA20 League is happening at the same time as three other existing T20 franchise leagues including the Bangladesh Premier League, the Super Smash T20 in New Zealand, and the Big Bash League in Australia. Coming soon is also the ILT20 tournament in the UAE, which begins just 3 days after this one in South Africa. See what one user had to say:
Seeing multiple T20 leagues happening around the world, I have decided not to put pressure on my son about study, instead I will ask and coach him more focused on cricket. Which is a good earning source as cricket becomes professional.#IPLT20 #SA20 #T10 #BBLT20 #BPLT20 etc….

Nothing is a success without innovation and SA20 2023 is here with a number of new rules including a special way to get a bonus point in every game, motivating batsmen to play a bit more fearless cricket. Additionally, the entire Virat Kohli – Muhammad Nawaz drama that took place in the 2022 T20 World Cup won’t be repeated because being bowled on a FREE HIT will now be a dead ball and nothing else.
How to get a Bonus Point in SA20:
– If you are chasing, chase it under 16 Overs.
– If you are defending, restrict the opponent to 80% of your score. (If you score 160, restrict them below 128).
This is only valid when the team batting first doesn't get bowled out. (Likely).

Some rules for the #SA20 are simply superb (not saying it because I’m working on it).
Remember that Nawaz-Kohli incident in the final over? Kohli was bowled off the free-hit ball but it ricocheted for three runs…this won’t happen in #SA20. Ball will be considered dead if bowled— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) January 9, 2023
If you are bowled off a free hit, you can’t get any runs. Dead ball! Ridiculous to punish a bowler for cleaning a batter up.

There’s a whole lot of debate happening around whether the dead ball rule should have been implemented or not, but we’re sure bowlers around the world will be happy about this rule. It was heart-breaking to see Nawaz’s reaction in that T20 WC game, though our hearts leapt with joy to see Kohli getting 3 runs off the ball, even though he was bowled on the free-hit.
What’s even better is the fact that captains have to come to the toss with their 13-member squad for the day and they can select their playing eleven after the toss, giving more flexibility to captains. In the future, we may even see other franchise leagues adopting some of these rules.Â
Teams can finalise their XIs after the toss in the #SA20 competition which kicks off today. Am a big fan of this.
