The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen some of the best bowlers in the world participate in it over the years. While being on this list does not make you one of the best bowlers in the world, it does indicate the wicket-taking prowess of bowlers in the T20 format. This list talks about some of the leading wicket takes in IPL history.

Ravindra Jadeja has played more IPL Matches than anyone else on this list. While he has played more matches, he is fifth when it comes to the number of balls bowled. Ravichandran Ashwin, Sunil Narine, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Piyush Chawla have all bowled more balls than Ravindra Jadeja in the Indian Premier League. Jadeja comes in at the 10th position on this list with 156 wickets. He has spent most of his Indian Premier League career playing for Chennai Super Kings and has developed into a terrific bowler and wicket-taker for them. If Jadeja keeps playing for a good amount of time, he may even overtake the wicket tally of IPL greats like Lasith Malinga.
Jasprit Bumrah is regarded as one of, if not the best, Indian bowler ever. However, he ranks just ninth on this list of highest wicket-takers in the Indian Premier League. This is most likely due to the others having played more games and bowled more balls than he has in his career.
Only Lasith Malinga has bowled fewer balls than Jasprit Bumrah in this list. Bumrah has picked up 158 wickets in just 2934 balls. He boasts the third-highest average of anyone on the list, coming in at an average of 22.68. Bumrah most certainly has a lot more games and many more wickets left in his IPL career, and it will not be a shock if he ends his career at the top of this list.
Lasith Malinga is one of the best bowlers the Indian Premier League has seen. He bowled with one of the most peculiar actions but still managed to get some incredible results. He has picked up 170 wickets in his IPL career and is eighth on this list, but he would surely be higher if he had played for a longer time in the league. Malinga has bowled the least number of balls than anyone on this list and has the best average. He finished his IPL career with an average of 19.85 and an economy of 7.16.

Ravichandran Ashwin has played for Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant (no longer participates in IPL), Kings XI Punjab (renamed as Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin has had an IPL team ever since the tournament started in 2008. He is still playing in the competition, adding to his tally of wickets. He has taken 172 wickets till now and is chasing down the players ahead of him. While Yuzvendra Chahal seems to be very far off for now, Ashwin can surely catch up to the rest of the players on this list.

Sunil Narine made his debut in the Indian Premier League in 2012 for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has only ever represented one team in IPL. He very recently overtook Lasith Malinga to become the player with the most IPL wickets for a single franchise. All 172 of his wickets have come for KKR, beating the previous record of 170 wickets for Mumbai Indians set by Lasith Malinga. Sunil Narine has the best economy rate as compared to any other player on this list. He currently boasts an average of 25.59 and an economy of 6.75.

Amit Mishra is another bowler renowned for his wicket-taking skills. It comes as no shock to see him so high up on this list. Amit Mishra has played for Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers (no longer participates in the tournament), Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants. Most of his appearances, however, came while playing for Delhi Daredevils (rebranded as Delhi Capitals). Amit Mishra has managed to pick up 173 wickets in IPL at an average of 23.87 and an economy rate of 7.38.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India (no longer competes in the tournament), and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. He has short stints with both Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014. He has since played from them and proved his worth as one of India’s best wicket-takers. He has picked up 174 wickets in the IPL and is yet going strong. He has already picked up four wickets in IPL 2024 in just seven games. In his IPL career till now, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has had an average of 26.90 and an economy rate of 7.52.
Piyush Chawla is the third-highest wicket-take in Indian Premier League history. The Indian spinner is still playing, chasing down Dwayne Bravo, who currently holds the second spot. Piyush Chawla has played for Kings XI Punjab (rebranded as Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians. Chawla has an average of 27.16 and an economy rate of 7.97 in his IPL career. The player has been playing on and off for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, but if he can find some form, he will surely be able to overtake Bravo and become the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history this season itself.

Dwayne Bravo has represented the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Gujarat Lions (no longer participates in the tournament) in his Indian Premier League career. He has spent most of his IPL career playing for Chennai Super Kings and ended up clutching the game for the franchise with both bat and ball on multiple occasions. Bravo was an extremely good death bowler, which explains why he is so high on this list of leading IPL wicket-takers. He finished his IPL career with 183 wickets at an average of 23.83 and an economy rate of 8.39.

Yuzvendra Chahal very recently became the only player in Indian Premier League history to reach the 200 wickets milestone. He did this against Mumbai Indians after picking up the wicket of Mohammad Nabi. The closest active player behind Chahal is Piyush Chawla, who is 19 wickets behind.
The only player who may end up achieving this feat in the near future seems to be Jasprit Bumrah, which goes to show just how impressive this record held by Yuzvendra Chahal is. Chahal has picked up 200 wickets in the IPL at an average of 21.61 and an economy rate of 7.73. The Rajasthan Royals star, however, does not seem to be finished with the IPL just yet and will surely add some more wickets to his name before retiring.
