The Derby d’Italia is the name of the football derby between two of the biggest Italian football teams, Juventus and Inter Milan. The term was coined in 1967 by Italian sports journalist Gianni Brera. The matchup between Juventus and Inter is perhaps the most intense match in Italy between two teams from different cities. The players and fans both have a massive rivalry with each other, especially after the Calciopoli, which saw Juventus stripped of their league title from 2005/06 and given to Inter. This article talks about the five best Derby d’Italia showdowns that have taken place between the two teams throughout the years.
One of the best Derby d’Italia games took place on 29th April 2018. Juventus were under pressure after many years, with Napoli challenging them to the title. Juventus had a very important game against Inter Milan coming up, which would be decisive in the title challenge. Juventus started off strong thanks to an early goal by Douglas Costa. However, a goal by Mauro Icardi in the 52nd minute and an own goal by Barzagli in the 65th minute put Inter Milan in the lead. It looked like Juventus would lose, but an 87th-minute own goal by Skriniar and a Gonzalo Higuain goal in the 89th minute helped Juventus complete a spectacular comeback.

The game between Juventus and Inter Milan on 26th April 1998 is known as one of the most iconic Derby d’Italia matches in history. The only goal came thanks to an acute finish from Alessandro Del Piero in the 69th minute. However, the game is known for the controversy that followed. Mark Iuliano seemed to foul Ronaldo Nazario in the box, but referee Piero Ceccarini waved play on. Juventus sprinted to the other side, and Ceccarini decided to award a penalty after Taribo West’s clumsy challenge. Del Piero ended up missing the penalty, but this series of decisions caused an absolute outrage amongst the Inter Milan fans and players.
The Derby d’Italia game between Inter Milan and Juventus, which took place on 10th March 2002, was an absolute banger. Clarence Seedorf opened the scoring very early on, scoring in the 6th minute to put Inter Milan in the lead. However, David Trezeguet managed to level the score in the 13th minute. The score stayed level till almost the end of the game, and it looked like it would end in a draw. However, Igor Tudor managed to score in the 82nd minute to give Juventus the lead. This would have certainly helped Juventus clinch the win, but Seedorf was not done yet and scored in the 90th minute to level the score and help Inter Milan secure a draw.

Baggio scored the first goal in the 30th minute and followed this up by scoring a second in the 37th minute. While this put Juventus in a very good position, Baggio was not done yet.
