Thomas Tuchel has been announced as England’s manager and is set to take over from the 2025 season. His appointment as the head coach of the England football team marks a significant turning point for both the national squad and the coach himself. Tuchel, who has built a reputation as one of the most tactically astute and innovative managers in football, is stepping into a role fraught with expectation as he aims to lead England to its first major international trophy since 1966. Tuchel has been extremely successful at the club level but this is the first time he will be managing a country and this new experience will surely be trying for him.

Thomas Tuchel’s managerial career started with FC Augsburg II in 2007. He impressed with the club and was soon appointed as the manager of FC Mainz. The manager spent a major chunk of his career at Mainz, honing and developing his managerial tactics. He proved his worth at the club, helping them reinvent their style of play. Many German clubs became interested in signing the manager after seeing his work but it was Borussia Dortmund who finally managed to snag him ahead of the 2015/16 season after Jurgen Klopp announced that he was leaving.

The German manager did well with Borussia Dortmund, helping them develop and win the DFB Pokal. However, problems began to arise between the manager and the club’s management. After being unable to resolve these problems, the club and the manager decided to part ways. It was Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) who decided to sign him in May 2018. According to reports, the manager rejected Bayern Munich to join PSG.

Thomas Tuchel won the Ligue 1 title in consecutive years with the club and had the highest win percentage of any other manager in Ligue 1 history, but once again, a fractured relationship with the hierarchy of the club saw him leave. After this, he joined Chelsea and guided them to a UEFA Champions League title. He was dismissed by the club on 7th September 2022 and he returned to Germany shortly after to take charge of Bayern Munich.

Once again Thomas Tuchel was successful at the club, helping them lift the Bundesliga title in the 2022/23 season. However, near the end of the next season, it was announced that Tuchel would be leaving after the end of the season. This was the last club he managed in his career before being appointed as England’s head coach. It is clear that Thomas Tuchel has been successful almost everywhere he has gone but his arrival has also been followed by his departure soon after, many times after having troubles with the club’s management.

I don’t think people realise just how good Thomas Tuchel would be for England.

While his ability to keep relationships might be questionable, his talent as a brilliant manager has already been proven time and time again. One of the hallmarks of Tuchel’s management is his tactical versatility. He is known for employing a dynamic fluidity in formations, regularly switching between a three-man and four-man defence depending on the opposition. Tuchel’s ability to adapt his tactics is essential for a national team taking on diverse opponents in international tournaments.

Tuchel emphasises possession-based football, relying on high pressing and quick transitions, which are integral in modern football. His teams typically excel in ball recovery, ensuring they stay compact defensively before launching swift counterattacks. This high-intensity style of play could invigorate the England squad, integrating players with high work rates and technical abilities, to maximise their attacking prowess while maintaining defensive readiness. The appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England’s manager is a huge change in the history of the nation but one which we think will end up being very fruitful for them.
